While GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 remain popular enough for independent role-play servers to prosper, not all of them can go on. The publisher of the game, Rockstar Games, set new rules that prohibit selling lootboxes and NFT tokens. The servers violating these rules are already getting banned.

One of the greatest things about the most successful games by Rockstar is their moddability. Not only can gamers on PC modify their copies of game, but also server admins that can alter the games, introduce home rules like in Monopoly, adding new roles to take on, from generic gangsters to law-abiding citizens caught in the clash of gangs. All these changes are more than welcomed by players that know the storyline of the original GTA V inside out.

Yet not all mods are created equal. Some of these servers heavily introduce paid services, like lootboxes with useful items, in-game currency, as well as items that can be used outside of the game. The latter include cryptocurrencies and NFTs in all their variety. The use of all trademarks should be authorized, and the officially available multiplayer modes should not be harmed or altered. Finally, these independent servers cannot offer unofficial maps, missions, and stories.

What can Rockstar do with the violators? The easiest thing to do is to ban them, and this is as easily done as said. But if Rockstar applies these prohibitions in full, it will lead to banning virtually all the standalone servers, which will cause serious decline in popularity. So its primary targets are those using prohibited methods of monetizing, namely NFT, cryptocurrencies, and lootboxes. But the hammer is up in the air, and it may fall down at any moment. Will it be the release day of GTA VI?
