One of the latest initiatives by Square Enix included remastering all the six original Final Fantasy games and releasing them on PC and mobile platforms. The first three titles are already available on Steam and mobile app stores. Now we know when to expect the remaining three.

According to SteamDB, the remastered games will be released in chronological order. Logically, the first one to hit the stores will be Final Fantasy 4, scheduled on August 19. The next title, Final Fantasy 5, is expected on September 9. Finally (pun intended), Final Fantasy 6 will arrive on September 30. It’s pretty soon, especially given that the earlier titles are already here.

But are they worth the wait? Some gamers will appreciate the long-awaited remaster of the original games, not the second derivatives that have been available on mobiles as ports from PSP versions. Others will feel suspicious after looking at how low these remastered games are rated. But it’s not so simple either, as the reasons for these rates may be quite irrational.

As you can see from reviews from the players who have bothered to leave at least some text, the reason for protesting is not the quality of the remastered versions themselves. The real reason was that games are only released on mobiles and PC, but not on consoles. On Metacritic and other rating sites, rates have been extremely (and undeservedly) low; now, though, you can read some discussion in user reviews, leveling the rates up to more palatable values.

The games turn out to be quite decent remasters, and the greatest thing about them is compatibility with modern devices. That’s what console players wanted the most and what they didn’t receive. Still, Square Enix says it’s possible to release console versions of the remastered Final Fantasy titles if it sees a demand strong enough.
