Judging by the latest news, Instagram decided to carry out a massive clear-out of its non-essential applications and close less popular ones. Previously, representatives of the social network announced the termination of support for the IGTV app. Why do people need a standalone product if the main platform performs the same functions? This week also revealed that the company has already removed Boomerang and Hyperlapse from digital stores.

These are quite old applications that were once popular among users, but now they are not so in demand. Although, according to Apptopia data, Boomerang was still downloaded by about 26 thousand users every day (information at the time of the service removal). In total, Boomerang has been downloaded 301 million times, and Hyperlapse around 23 million times (over their entire existence). Of course, if you compare these figures with other platforms, they are not so impressive. For example, according to SensorTower statistics, in the last quarter of 2021 alone, Instagram was installed more than 170 million times.

Closing these services is a completely natural step. Previously, they made access to video creation and editing tools more accessible. Now all these features are in the main Instagram app, and it seems pointless to support both Boomerang and Hyperlapse. It is also not surprising because the trend for so-called super-apps (combining several different services) remains popular this year. It is exactly the approach that Meta takes in the Instagram development and update.

However, some users certainly planned to continue using closed applications and may not even have an Instagram profile. How do you feel about these services' removal? Did you use them? Or are the tools that Instagram offers enough for you?
